Bethel’s Green Biz Certification

Hello Friends,

After a couple years of serious work to modify our campus to be greener and more efficient, we are finally Greenbiz Certified!! Check out the write-up in the Cupertino Business Newsletter. Pretty Cool Stuff. Be on the lookout for our certification sticker and logo that we will place on our publications. I will also hold a forum soon to go over specifics of the program and encourage all of you to implement some of the changes in your homes as well. We are all called to be good stewards of the earth God has provided. We are officially on that path :-)

Peace, Tom Hoegel
Bethel Facilities Team Leader

Welcome New Green Businesses!

GreenBiz Cupertino proudly welcomes two new businesses to our Certified Green Business community! These businesses achieved certification through the Bay Area Green Business Program, a certification program which distinguishes organizations that protect, sustain and preserve the environment.

Bethel Lutheran Church & School

Bethel Lutheran is the first elementary school and second church in Cupertino to achieve Bay Area Green Business Certification.

At Bethel Lutheran, actions speaker louder than words. By becoming a certified green business and adopting actions that improve public and environmental health, Bethel Lutheran serves as an example of environmental leadership to its students and congregation.

Located at 10181 Finch Ave, Bethel Lutheran adopted many sustainability best practices to achieve certification, including using all non-toxic cleaning products and recycled paper; installing energy-efficient lighting, a solar array, and low-flow faucet aerators; using a three container waste system (compost, recycling & landfill); tuning up their HVAC system; and planting drought tolerant plants. Not only is sustainability incorporated into Bethel Lutheran’s operations, but it is also integrated into Bethel Lutheran’s school curriculum and church sermons.

Bethel Lutheran’s mission to be good stewards of the environment is far from over. Down the road, the church and school is looking at installing some electric car charging stations to encourage employees and the congregation to drive alternative fuel vehicles.

“Our next step is to challenge the congregation to do the same in their houses,” said Facilities Team Leader & Youth Director, Tom Hoegel. “I highly recommend businesses to do the work to get certified. It isn’t necessarily easy, but it is worth it.”

FIT36® Fitness Studio

FIT36® joins our GreenBiz community as Cupertino’s first certified fitness studio. At FIT36®, health, fitness, and the environment go hand in hand. Located in the Nineteen800 retail center, FIT36® uses all LED lighting and flooring made of recycled rubber; cleans with only non-toxic products; and requires patrons to bring reusable water bottles.

As a mom and school board member, franchise owner Kristen Lyn feels that it is her calling to help fight for a healthier environment for future generations and strives to maintain FIT36® as a healthy space for all.

In addition to Bethel Lutheran and FIT36®, three other Cupertino businesses achieved recertification in recent months, re-confirming their commitment to protecting our environmental and public health. Congratulations, Purglen of Cupertino, the Driving Machine, and the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors!
