Set Two: verses 18-20
“He is the head of the body, the church;”
Here the Cosmic Christ over all creation is brought down to earth, where blood flows from a body nailed to a cross.
Christians know the supreme Creator and Sustainer of all things as the crucified and resurrected Lord.
In Paul’s time philosophy often compared the cosmos with a body. Here Paul uses this analogy for the Church.
The focus here however is on Christ not the Church. God’s purposes for all creation gestate in the Church, in order to fulfill God’s redemptive work for all creation.
