Out ‘n About is going to amazing Ano Nuevo State Park! We will visit the elephant seals on January 6 at 11:00. Looking across the dunes, we will see, as well as walk near, one of the largest mainland breeding colonies in the world, there on Anó Nuevo’s beaches! We can expect to see some newly born pups as well as hundreds of elephant seal moms. In addition, the hundreds of males, up to 4500 pounds in size (more than most cars!), will be hanging around on the beach. Elephant seals are easily recognized by their huge noses, resembling an elephant’s trunk. It’s a special treat to see the seals as they can dive down into the ocean water, as much as 1700 feet, about 30 stories, and generally spend about 3 minutes at the surface between their dives. On our walk, we will have the advantage of a guide to tell us about these animals and their habitat. The park’s trails and walkways are clearly marked. There is also a visitors’ center, gift shop, benches along the route, and so much natural beauty to enjoy. Following our elephant seal adventure, we will stop at grab some lunch before we head home. The bus will leave Bethel at 9 a.m. The cost of admission to the park and the bus ride + parking is $25 per person.
